Mister Loveless is one of the nation’s hottest up & coming indie bands. In addition, they were recently selected by fans to show off how they use Apple technology in their music. They will square-off with Exist Elsewhere during the Macworld’s iNDIE iNNOVATION Championship.

YUP! We have once again entered the time of year when Macworld announces Apple’s new hardware and software. Thousands upon thousands will gather at the Moscone Center to hear brands pitch their newest products. However, while apple brands are focusing on their sales pitches … I’m super excited about two bands that got their pitch covered now they’re here to rock!

Only moments after my phone call with LA band Exist Elsewhere I got the much-anticipated email from John of Guerrilla Management here in SF. As I suspected he heard that I was interviewing the other participant of iNDIE INNOVATION and he wanted to get Mister Loveless in on the fun!

Always eager to help promote an SF band I jumped on the opportunity to help tell their story:

Who are the members of Mister Loveless?

  • Rob I. Miller – Vocals/Guitars
  • Sean Gaffney – Guitars
  • Charlie Koliha – Bass Guitar
  • Nick Clark – Drums

Rob, how did you find out about the Indie Innovation competition and Macworld/iWorld.

Our friend Jeff at Red Bull Soundstage informed us about the competition.

What apple tools do you use most?

My MacBook Pro gets a lot of use because it’s primarily for recording music. I sequence tracks in Ableton or Logic and do a lot of demo recording with ProTools.

Is there one you couldn’t live without?

I have an 160gb iPod Classic that I truly could not live without. I work in a record store and am constantly coming home with new music and uploading it onto my iPod. To part with it would be tragic.

Do you have apple products on stage with you?

On occasion, we’ll have Nick trigger a pre recorded sample of a BART train before “Bridge and Tunnel Kids” kicks in. Depending on what the stage set up is, we’ll have either a MacBookiPad, or iPod up there for him.

What song would you say best encompasses your desire to call to arms and challenge a generation to find their place in the world and make it their own.?

Probably “Nineties Children” or “Strange and Futureless” though, that is a difficult question to answer. I feel that’s a theme best represented by listening to the record cover to cover.

You’ve been together since July 2003. How did you form the band?

Charlie and I met in High School. I was 16 years old at the time. He showed me how to play a few chords on his Dad’s guitar and I started writing songs. He borrowed a bass from a friend and we started playing them together. Soon after, we recruited a few other kids from school to play with us and debuted our material at a Battle of the Bands. After that first taste of performing live we never really looked back. We just kept going.

What have been the biggest challenges?

  1. Finding the right band members
  2. Money
  3. Sobriety.

Do you all have roles off the stage, who is responsible for what?

I handle most the booking and the basic administrative work that comes with being an independent band. Often times, I’ll ask one of the others to help me with certain tasks but we don’t necessarily have designated off stage roles. Pretty sure we all started playing in a band to avoid that type of thing.

Do you get together and plan.

We do. We all live together and discuss the band’s plans for touring, writing, and recording frequently. We are all working toward making this our career and treat it very seriously. Naturally, we like to have a good time too and still like keep things a little loose so it doesn’t feel too much like work.

How did you create your persona? Your overall look for stage, web, cds?

That was never really discussed. We’re just ourselves. We wouldn’t know how to do much else. Charlie (our bassist) has always been my favorite photographer. His photographs have always been a big part of the art direction for the band. I like really simple, classic fonts which is why we’ve generally stuck to a few slightly personalized versions of Helvetica for the fonts associated with the group.

How do you currently promote your band?

Tour relentlessly and post as much unique content with as much frequency on the internet as possible.

What has been the best way to plug-in to the industry around you? (Other bands, industry folk, fans)

Going out to shows and talking to people in person remains the very best way to network. The internet is a great tool for following up and maintaining those relationships.

What is your favorite venue to play in SF?

It’s a tie between The Independent and Bottom of the Hill. Both are incredible clubs with great sound and amazing staff.

What venue do you want to play, but haven’t?

We’ve always wanted to play the Fillmore.

Are there any bands that you love that we should watch for? Perhaps from SF?

  1. B. Hamilton - OAKLAND
  2. Stomacher - SAN FRANCISCO
  3. Books on Fate - SAN FRANCISCO
  4. The Bilinda Butchers - SAN FRANCISCO

THANKS, THIS HAS BEEN SUPER AWESOME!!!
